It’s possible for radiotherapy to create scar tissue inside the vaginal cavity, shortening and narrowing the space and in some cases causing the vaginal walls to stick together. This can cause discomfort and even pain during intercourse, pelvic examinations and even daily life.

Please note: do not use dilators during cancer treatment, as tissue is still sore and sensitive during this time. Wait for at least two weeks after your last treatment to give any inflammation the chance to go down.

1. Start with the size that is most comfortable for you.
2. Using the size that is most comfortable for you, slowly insert the round end of the dilator into your vagina.
3. Always insert it in the direction of your spine (back) straight or at a slightly downward angle, like you would insert a tampon.
4. Continue to insert the dilator slowly until you feel slight discomfort or muscle tension, then stop.
5. The dilator should feel snug but not painful.
6. Never use force and stop if you feel pain.
7. If you don’t feel any pressure when you insert it, you might need to use a larger sized dilator.
8. Allow the dilator to stay in position for at least a few minutes.
9. If it does not cause you any discomfort, you could try doing Kegel exercises during this time.
10. Gently push the dilator in and out to stretch the length of your vagina.
11. Gently rotate the dilator in wide circles to stretch the width of your vagina.
12. Repeat this at the back, middle, and opening of your vagina.
13. When you’re finished with these steps, remove the dilator.
14. Wash your dilator with hot, soapy water. Then dry it with a clean towel or paper towel.
15. Store it as instructed in your kit.

The shape makes them comfortable to use and they are not rigid plastic so offers a certain amount of flexibility.
